What do you find in Belle Fourche S.D.? This 1938 Lincoln Zephyr is what Dave found there in 1990. He stuck with the negotiating for 6 months until the final purchase was made. The previous owner was using it as a donor car for another Lincoln project so all Dave was buying was a rolling shell with good sheetmetal. The drivetrain and trim parts were gone but Dave saw a perfect hotrod.
The original thought was to leave it as a coupe but he couldn't get past the styling of the roof and front window. He spent time drawing it with different rooflines and finally decided it looked best without one at all and it became a convertible. The folding mechanism for the top was completely hand fabricated by Dave. This Zephyr has an 8" lower profile in the top alone.
Dave's Lincoln was his winter project for 3 years during the off season of the Broken Spoke Saloon. His figures show he spent about 2500 hours on this streetrod. With the roof being removed Dave added a x-member to the boxed frame for support. The used drive train components came from a donor 1991 I-Rock Camaro that had 2900 miles on it. All of the luxuries found in any top vehicle are found here. It has a leather interior, air conditioning and power everything. It rides and drives like a dream. Dave has driven this to most major show events on the West coast and it has won numerous awards including: Award of Excellence & Mayors Choice in Yuma AZ, Top Ten in Las Vegas and the Boyd Coddington Pro-Pick in Scottsdale AZ.
